15th Region basketball All-State honorees
The 15th region was loaded with talent this year in both girls’ and boys’ basketball, and their achievements did not go unnoticed around the state. The Lexington Herald-Leader just released their All-State basketball teams from this past season, and the 15th region was well represented. Over 100 coaches around the state were asked to send in their top 10 players from both girls’ and boys’ high school basketball in Kentucky and the top 50 players that received votes make up the All-State list. Jim Calhoun: The Carr Creek Indian’s basketball journey
Jim Calhoun was a sophomore starter on the great 1956 State champion Carr Creek Indians team. They finished with a 33-3 mark and the big trophy. For the next two years Jim Calhoun remained a Carr Creek Indian as they would finish 25-8 in 1957 and 26-4 in 1958. In 1957 Calhoun was selected as an All State 3rd Team member.. Former guard who revealed ‘unofficial policy’ of abuse at prison sentenced to four years
LONDON, Ky. — A former guard at the Martin County federal prison has been sentenced for his role in a conspiracy to abuse inmates. Terry Melvin, 60, pleaded guilty in January 2025 to conspiracy against rights and deprivation of civil rights.On Thursday, he was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. The charges stemmed from Melvin’s time as a lieutenant at U.S. Penitentiary Big Sandy. In his plea agreement, he described an “unofficial” policy of abuse at the prison. MCDOWELL, Ky. – Some may remember Kobe Bryant’s retirement game in 2016. The late legend scored a smooth 81 points to finish a career already flush with accomplishments. It may be odd to imagine, but a high school player from right here in Eastern Kentucky matched that, dropping exactly 81 points in a single game. Former clinic owners charged in federal drug conspiracy
FRANKFORT, Ky. — One of the owners of a defunct Pikeville pain management clinic has pleaded guilty to a federal drug conspiracy charge, while his former partner faces an indictment of her own. Bryce Layne May, 58, of Ashville, N.C., appeared in Frankfort federal court Wednesday to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. May was partners with Brandy Melissa Meadows, 47, of Pikeville, in the operation of the now-closed Kentucky Mountain Health clinic on Hibbard Street in Pikeville.
