VOLLEYBAL: Lady Kats Advance in State Tournament After 3-1 Win Over Knott Central
The Shelby Valley Lady Kats kept their remarkable season alive Monday night, advancing in the Girls Volleyball State Tournament with a 3-1 win over Knott County Central. Valley took the match with sets of 25-19, 27-25, 22-25 and 25-13. The victory adds to what has been an incredible run for the Lady Kats, who now stand at 34-5 on the season. Next up, Shelby Valley will face the powerhouse Assumption Rockets in the state quarterfinals. That matchup is set for Friday, November 7 at 11 a.m. at George Rogers Clark High School. Pike man arrested for breaking into home, threatening woman
PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County man has been arrested for breaking into a house and threatening a woman inside. Police were first alerted to the incident just before 9 p.m., Sunday, when a distraught and naked man showed up at the back door of the police station screaming for help. The man told police that Richard May, 38, of Pikeville, had broken into a woman’s house and was threatening her with brass knuckles. The man said he was able to escape from the house to run for help. All proceedings to be moved out of Pikeville federal courthouse
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The days of federal court trials and hearings being held in Pikeville are coming to an end, following an order issued by Chief U.S. District Judge David Bunning last week. The Pikeville federal courthouse currently serves Pike, Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Letcher, Magoffin and Martin counties. According to the order, all pending and new cases will be reassigned to other federal courthouses after Dec. 31. Under the new arrangement, cases arising from Pike, Floyd, Knott and Letcher counties will now be assigned to the London federal courthouse. Defense attorney objects to any further delay in Amber Spradlin trial
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — The attorney for the man accused of killing Amber Spradlin is objecting to a delay in the upcoming trial. Spradlin’s body was found June 18, 2023, at the Arkansas Creek home of Prestonsburg dentist Michael McKinney. McKinney’s son, M.K. McKinney, is charged with her murder. Both McKinneys and family friend Josh Mullins also face charges for allegedly trying to cover up the crime. Commonwealth’s Attorney Brent Turner asked last month to postpone the Dec. 1 trial, saying the state crime lab needs more time to finish DNA testing.
