Local groups receive America250KY grants for historic preservation
FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Heritage Council has announced the final round of America250KY Sub-Grant Awards supporting the preservation of historic sites in Kentucky in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. And two communities in our area are receiving the grants. Martin County will receive $20,000 to create an exhibit commemorating President Lyndon B. Johnson’s declaration of a War on Poverty during a visit to Inez in 1964. The Wayland Historical Society and Mountain Sports Hall of Fame are also receiving $20,000 to work with BitSource to develop an interactive exhibit celebrating coal camp life and small-town sports […]

Police have wall removed to arrest burglary suspect
PIPPA PASSES, Ky. — A man was arrested for burglary and other charges after getting stuck inside the walls of a Knott County apartment. Police were called to Caney Creek Apartments, in Pippa Passes, by a woman who reported that 30-year-old Johnathan Crawford was outside her apartment, threatening her with a table leg and scaring nearby children. When state troopers arrived, the woman told them that Crawford had climbed into the attic and was refusing to come out. Johnson Central Cruises Past Betsy Layne in 90-62 Win
The Johnson Central Golden Eagles rolled to a 90-62 home victory over Betsy Layne on Monday night. Johnson Central had four players finish in double figures, led by a big night from Brayden Shepherd. Shepherd poured in 30 points while shooting 61.1 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from three-point range and finishing perfect at the free-throw line. Ethan Cole followed with 20 points, shooting 63.6 percent from the field and an impressive 85.7 percent from beyond the arc. Weddington’s 40-Point, 20-Rebound Night Lifts Phelps Past Magoffin
The Phelps Hornets picked up a big road win Monday night, defeating the Magoffin County Hornets 85-76. Phelps had two players finish in double figures, led by an incredible performance from Tyler Weddington. Weddington posted a dominant double-double with 40 points and 20 rebounds — video game-type numbers that powered Phelps to the win. Ethan Fields followed with 18 points to round out Phelps’ double-figure scorers. MBB: Marshall Men’s Basketball Takes Down Top-Ranked South Alabama, 84-80
PRESS RELEASE: MARSHALL ATHLETICS HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Men’s Basketball knocked down 12 first-half 3-pointers and Wyatt Fricks had a pair of huge plays in the late stages as the Thundering Herd knocked off top-ranked South Alabama, 84-80, in front of 3,932 fans at Cam Henderson Center.
