Health Wagon receives grant for emergency medical training equipment
WISE, Va. — Patients and staff at the Health Wagon of Wise will benefit from a $5,200 grant from the Appalachian Power Foundation that will provide much-needed emergency medical training equipment and supplies. The grant was written by Lisa D. Rife, BS Educ, NRP, EMS, a paramedic with 10 years of experience who previously worked as a teacher and grant writer. Rife said she plans to use the new equipment to provide American Heart Association Basic Life Support and CPR training, including instruction on the use of automated external defibrillators, or AEDs. Prosecution files response objecting to work release for Amber Spradlin murder suspect
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — Prosecutors are opposing a request by the man charged with killing Amber Spradlin to reduce the financial conditions of his bond and allow him to be released for work while he awaits trial on a murder charge. Attorneys for M.K. McKinney filed a motion last month making that request.In their motion, they argued that recent DNA test results weakened the case against their client, and that he should not be held under the same strict conditions as a result. Former Prestonsburg mayor arrested for DUI
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — The former mayor of Prestonsburg was arrested Monday for driving under the influence. Prestonsburg Police received a call just after 11 a.m., reporting a reckless driver on University Drive. Police were told the vehicle was swerving and pulled into the Food City parking lot, running up on the sidewalk as it did so. Prestonsburg Police Det. Dennis Hutchinson found the vehicle parked in the fire lane next to the supermarket, still running with former Mayor Jerry Fannin, 69, of Prestonsburg, sitting the driver’s seat. UPike professor awarded grant to study plant-based medicine
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – University of Pikeville Professor of Molecular Biology Kevin Wang, Ph.D., has been awarded a $351,311 National Institutes of Health grant to develop a rapid, plant-based method for producing reteplase, a potentially lifesaving medication used in the emergency treatment of certain severe heart attacks. The 33-month project, titled “Rapid Production of Nonglycosylated Reteplase for Affordable Thrombolytic Therapy,” is supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, an institute within the NIH, through an R15 award. Beshear announces plan to erase a quarter of a billion dollars’ worth of medical debt
FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear has launched a new program aimed at eliminating $250 million in medical debt for more than 130,000 Kentuckians. Beshear signed an executive order Tuesday establishing the Team Kentucky Medical Debt Relief Program. The initiative directs $2.5 million to Undue Medical Debt, a national nonprofit that purchases medical debt from participating hospitals and collection agencies and then forgives it.
