Pikeville Fire Dept. rescues dog from cliff
PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Pikeville firefighters are being hailed as heroes for going to great lengths — and heights — to rescue a lost dog. A Pikeville family had been searching for their three dogs who had gotten away from their downtown home. On Saturday, one of the dogs, Luna, was spotted trapped on a cliff overlooking the Pikeville Bypass. Pikeville Fire Department used its ladder truck to get up to Luna and bring her down safely. The owner has reportedly been reunited with all three dogs.

Dewey Lake drowning victim identified
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A man who drowned Friday evening at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park has been identified. Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson identified the man as Damon Adams, 22, of Prestonsburg. At 7:22 p.m., Friday, a caller to 911 reported seeing Adams swimming at Dewey Lake, then go under and not resurface.That prompted a massive response from Prestonsburg Fire Department, Prestonsburg Police, the Floyd County Rescue Squad, Floyd County Emergency Management, the Deparment of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. More Kentucky foster kids take advantage of college aid tool
FRANKFORT, Ky. — More foster and adopted youth in Kentucky are using the state’s college tuition waiver created specifically for them, according to a new report. The report shows the graduation rate among students using the waiver is now around 40%, up from about 8% a decade ago. Lesa Dennis, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services, said the data show the Commonwealth is moving in the right direction. “I believe we are seeing increased utilization because community and technical colleges are often providing a more accessible and flexible pathway for our young adults transitioning from foster care,” Denis stated. Repeat drug charges could mean life sentence for Floyd woman
LONDON, Ky. — A Floyd County woman is facing a potential life sentence, after once again being indicted on federal drug charges. Gretchen Bevins, 46, of David, also known as Gretchen Woodruff, now faces charges of distributing meth and possession of meth and fentanyl with the intent to distribute. The charges result from her arrest in Pikeville back in April, when police raided her hotel room as part of an ongoing drug investigation.
