The madness behind the belief: Superstition expert explains fan rituals

by LINDSEY PIERCY LEXINGTON, Ky. — It’s the familiar March Madness frenzy: bracket predictions, buzzer-beater highlights and, of course, the quirks of fandom. Basketball fans have long found ways to feel like they can influence the outcome of a game — even from the couch. We embrace traditions that range from lucky attire to sitting in the same spot. While some might chalk these behaviors up to coincidence, one researcher at the University of Kentucky suggests there’s more at play. Jenny Rice, Ph.D., professor in the UK Department of Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies in the College of Arts and […]

Pike couple enters Alford pleas in abuse case doctors likened to torture

Jerome Norman and Mary HallPIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County couple has pleaded guilty in a child abuse case that doctors likened to torture. Jerome Norman, 44, and Mary Hall, 43, both of Raccoon, entered blind Alford pleas to one count of first-degree abuse and two amended counts of second-degree abuse. An Alford plea functions as a guilty plea, but allows a defendant to maintain innocence while acknowledging the evidence in the case would likely result in a conviction. The charges were the result of someone at the child’s school noticing several injuries and disturbing behaviors in January 2025. The person said they had […]

Offering a vital reminder that "the world's a better place with you in it," acclaimed WieRok Records husband/wife duo Grace Max return with "Better Place," their second single of the year and most personal track to date. Written by the couple, the autobiographical ballad draws inspiration from the Hope they've found amidst Grace's ongoing battle with depression. Collington Releases New Pop-Rock Single

Alt-rock artist Collington returns with his latest single, "Waiting for Daylight (ARRÊT)," available now on all major streaming platforms. The new track captures the tension of being caught in a forced pause--where doubt feels heavy, and clarity remains just out of reach. Built on a pop-forward rock foundation with a reflective core, "Waiting for Daylight (ARRÊT)" lives in the in-between. It's the honest space of wrestling through frustration while holding onto hope. With melodic energy reminiscent of Switchfoot, the song balances urgency and vulnerability without overcomplicating its message. "Darkness falls once again And I will try to pretend That it's day out But I know I'm wrong." From the opening verse, Collington sets the emotional tone--acknowledging the temptation to fake strength while admitting the deeper struggle beneath the surface. The pre-chorus becomes a simple but powerful plea "Say won't[...]

HOMECOMING Releases New Worship Anthem

Canadian worship collective HOMECOMING returns with their new single "Every Night Every Day," a worship-pop anthem that speaks directly to the quiet, internal struggles many believers carry but rarely voice. Blending cinematic swells with intimate pop-driven worship, the song reflects the tension between feeling distant from God and intentionally choosing to draw near in faith. Written by Canyon Lewis, Cole Isaac Adrian, and Brendan de la Rambelje, the track was born out of real moments of doubt, prayer, and surrender within the band's own journey. "I can't hear Your voice with the noise in my soul," the opening lyric confesses, setting the tone for a song that doesn't rush past struggle--but moves through it. At its core, "Every Night Every Day" is about choosing worship in the middle of inner noise and heaviness. The chorus anchors the message with a[...]

Dig deeper into the Story of God with Bible Gateway Plus

“‘In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.’ When I think there was a day when a human hand first wrote those words, I am filled with awe. This sentence is a masterpiece of compression.
